Twee Art // Hannah Frank

hannahfrank1

Art plays a big part in the decor of Twee Towers - so we thought we would share some of our favourite pieces. Hannah Frank's haunting black & white prints are a prominant feature in our home (we have 5 of them!). Born in 1908 -Hannah later studied art at the University of Glasgow - publishing works in the university magazine under the psuedonym "AL ARAAF" (the title of an Edgar Allan Poe poem). Some of her works reflect her feelings towards WW2, from a Jewish family with brothers in the army they depict dark, guant figure representing the plight of the refugees. Not all pieces are so sad, a lot of her work features ethereal figures, fairy and goddess like - in woodland settings. The four prints above are hung throughout the house - and the below is possibly one of our favorites - with its incredible detail, based on a poem by Percy Shelley.

The three prints above are on our wishlist. The first a beautiful figure reading Hans Christian Anderson's Fairy Tales would be a stunning addition, the others, strong feminine figures that would compliment our collection perfectly.

Hannah sadly died in 2008, aged 100! She left an incredible legacy and body of work, which inspires us in our work every day.

Hope you enjoy her art as much as we do! To learn more about Hannah Frank and her art visit: http://www.hannahfrank.org.uk/

Best Day Ever // The Day we Sang with Sir Paul

Our favourite memory... The Day we Saw Sir Paul!

paulmccartney

You may not have failed to notice that we are HUGE Beatles fans, so we couldn't miss the chance to see a real life living Beatle in concert when Sir Paul played Hard Rock Calling in June 2010...

Following the tremendous support of Elvis Costello, Crowded House and Crosby, Stills & Nash... We waited with baited breath and giddy with excitement for one of our four favourite Beatles (don’t make us choose!) to take the stage... He opened with ‘All My Loving’ – and I don’t think we stopped dancing from then on.

Enraptured in the moment... we were convinced to Give Peace a Chance, we cried when he sang 'Blackbird', and shed even more tears during his touching tribute to John - ‘Here Today’ ...

He performed some of our most loved Beatles tracks including A Day in The Life...

Along with a healthy sprinkling of Wings hits (yes!) and his own solo material, climaxing with his show stopping performance of Live and Let Die – we were totally blown away by the incredible use of PYROTECHNICS and fireworks.

Towards the end (after dancing the night away with us) Little M fell sound asleep when Macca and all of Hyde Park sang along to 'Hey Jude'... (we can always remind him of the day Paul McCartney sang him to sleep!)

Not even having to leave before the end to catch our train could bring us down as we danced up Park Lane singing along to "Get Back!" (though - please just don’t mention the fact that there was a second encore. Sob.)

It has to be said that Sir Paul has still got 'it' - such an entertainer and an enthralling performer, the whole crowd was hanging onto his every word and there wasn't a single person who looked like they weren't having the time of their lives... Magic!

Wish we could relive it again!

Huge love.

Literature Love // Edgar Allan Pooh

litloving copy

This week we've been perusing through a collection of Edgar Allan Poe's works. One of our favourites, 'The Tell Tale Heart', first published in 1843, is written from the perspective of an anonomous narrator, obsessed with the notion that he could commit the perfect crime, and get away with it. Driven to his moment of madness by the vulture like eye of an old man, he attacks, killing him and hides pieces of him under the floor boards. He insists on his sanity, confident in the face of interrogation - until the beating of the heart becomes too much...

It's a classic in the American Gothic genre (something which was of great appeal as 'angsty' teenagers), but as we like to keep things a little less bleak here at Twee Towers, we were slightly enthused to say the least when we stumbled across this...

Edgar Allan Pooh

If only all classic Victorian literature could be twee-ified in the style of Winnie The Pooh...

Have you been reading anything exciting this week?

Bruces' Ponderings // Bon Voyage

BonvoyageTheBoss

Bonjour, ca-va, whatever... Bruce here, but you can call me The Boss.

I have a dilemma, there are suitcases in the hall, the smell of suncream in the air - and the big floppy hat is down from the wall on the landing. Someone is going on holiday. I feel envy bristling in my fur, how I long to be casting off to distant shores, to feel the sand on my paws, a gentle tropic breeze through my whiskers...

Alas, no... I am forever destined to remain in the little close where Twee Towers sits. Quelle horror! I have been informed that the ferry sets sail at noon, and Rhi and Little M shall be on it. Returning to my homeland, without me (they think I am not French, because I was born in England, but Francais is a state of mind!).

They shall sip good wine, eat croissants and fine cuisine... and I shall continue to eat food from a pouch - merde!

Lola has informed me we shall have a blast... I'll probably milk it for a bit at first, demand more cuddles, play the sympathy card, you know... Then I'll probably just spend my days perfecting my chord changes on the guitar to Dancing in The Dark for my next Springsteen tribute gig, maybe even have a read of this Poe guy they've been talking non-stop about, I think I might like him, I hear it gets pretty dark...

Anyway, I'm over it! Bon Voyage Rhi & Little M - see you next week! Off to torture Lola.

Au revoir,

The Boss x

BonVoyage!

(Any excuse to wear stripes & berets! - Bye Rhi & Little M - have amazing time! Will miss you! L xx)
