Outfit Post // Vogue Festival 2012

As anyone who is following us on twitter or instagram will be well aware, on Saturday we were lucky enough to attend Vogue's very first fashion festival at the weekend. We will warn you now, this is probably going to be a long post, so much to tell you!

Untitled

Our journey to the Royal Geographical Society, the venue for the second day of the Vogue Fest, was somewhat less than stylish. We sleepily dragged ourselves up and out of bed at the ungodly hour of 5am, to manically rush to the train station, attracting some dubious stares from passers-by on our way as we coated up on layers of lipstick and clumped by in completely unpractical platforms (further confirmation on the unpracticality of platforms coming later...)

We then had an anxious 40 mins of watching announcements of our train getting more and more delayed! We made it to London with 15 minutes to make our way over to South Kensington, so we got our fast-as-we-can-in-huge-heels walk on!

Lauren wore: Coat, ASOS Premium; Collar, Lou Lou Loves You; Jeans, Topshop; Shirt, H&M (ribbon added!); Wedges, ASOS; Socks, Topshop; Satchel, H&M.

Rhi wore: Dress, Christopher Kane for Topshop; Coat, Topshop; Cardigan, Matalan; Shoes, Next; Bag, Primark

Equilibrium was restored once more as we flounced up Exhibition Road, home to the marvelous Natural History Museum and the V&A, stopping to take a few snaps of the magnificent architecture... until, Lauren stacked it and went head over heels (platform drama)... and came back up with a cut hand and damaged pride, gah. Luckily, there was only one other lovely man in the vicinity that viewed the disaster, and came over with concern and a whole lot of pity in his eyes. C'est la vie!

UntitledUntitled Untitled UntitledUntitled

First up was a talk by the absolutely incredible Diane Von Furstensberg, entitled, 'Turning a passion for life into a penchant for business'. We've all heard about formidable impact that Diane made upon the fashion world, creating the first ever wrap dress, and staying true to the goals she set for herself at an early age. She began her fairytale (literally, she married a Prince!) by recalling how she created her very first collection whilst heavily pregnant, and then continued by leading us through an enchanting labrinyth of her life, career twists and turns, her walk away from fashion, and finally her phenomenal comeback!

She was beautiful, inspirational, funny and unbelievably grounded. What a lady! We think everyone left wishing that DVF would be their fairy godmother, appearing whenever we had a momentary crisis of confidence, or were in desperate need of one her figure loving wrap dresses. We might even allow ourselves to watch all the re-runs of The City to get more glimpses of the DVF HQ! Here's a few of our favourite quotes from DVF,

"Be the woman you want to be."
"I was told to focus on the vintage, after all I am myself, vintage", DVF on bringing back her 70s wrap dresses.
"I had three children, a boy, a girl, and a brand."
"As a young girl, I did not know what I wanted to be, but I knew the woman that I wanted to be... independent, a woman that pays her own bills, can go out with a man without worrying if he'll call."

We left the main auditorium as fast we could to try and catch Tim Walker, only to find that that the session was already in progress and the queue for the second was so big it spiralled through 3 rooms. We are sad to say that we sacrificied our position to ensure that we didn't lose a seat for the next few talks back in the main theatre.

However, we did manage to find out that he only uses film rather than digital cameras and natural sunlight, amazing (thanks Emma!). For the hour that we had spare, we had a wander through some of the other rooms, and stumbled across the cover shoot room (where you could dress up in designer and adorn yourself with a Chanel bag and leave with a professionally taken photo of yourself on the front of a mocked up Vogue cover) The other highlight was the red lipstick bar... we died and went to red lipstick heaven!

Untitled

It was then time, to head back for the next session. Fashion Question Time! We definitely should have got ourselves a quick refreshment from one of the lovely make-shift cafes that Vogue had set up, dehydration is not cool. Anyway, Fashion QT was a panel of fashion's finest talent, including Christopher Kane, Holly Fulton, Henry Holland, Roksanda Ilincic, Mary Katrantzou and Nicholas Kirkwood, interrogated by a selection of questions sent in via twitter and the audience.

To our surprise, they were all incredibly humble and dare we say, quite shy. We were expecting Devil Wears Prada esque attitude from someone, but they all seemed, lovely. They were also all incredibly knowledgeable about the design business as a whole, and most of all realistic about their profession. Recalling moments of excitement as their business began to explode across the fash-o-sphere, divulging secrets about their pre-show nerves, post-show celebrations (they party hard) and offering fascinating insight into their brands and helpful advice to audience member's questions.

It has to be said, Roksanda Ilincic is out.of.this.world. Not only is she one of the most beautiful ladies in the whole universe, with a wardrobe and collection to die for (a collection that has been worn by Michelle Obama & Kate Middleton no less), but she is also blessed with the most enchanting, ethereal manner, it would be difficult not to be captivated by her absolute loveliness!

We have been banging on about our excitement for the David Bailey relentlessly for a week now, we apologise profusely if you follow us on twitter. It goes without saying that he is one of the most iconic photographers of our time. In fact, iconic doesn't even cover it. There's not anything that we can say about his back story that everyone shouldn't already know. Interviewed by Vogue Features Director, Jo Ellison, Bailey was an absolute gem. Completely charming, endearingly brash, charismatic and oh so, cheeky (admitting that he was unsure about the casting of Karen Gillan as the beautiful Jean Shimpton, joking that he'd rather bed Aneurin Barnard than Karen, eek!) In addition to this he spoke about his more recent ventures, namely the photography he's been doing out in Afghanistan. He had the whole auditorium laughing with him and at him, the entire time. Here's a few of our favourite Bailey quotes,

"Everybody has a story, I just have to find it"
"This shirt I'm wearing is, David Lawrence, Ralph Lawrence? what is it? Ralph Lauren!"
"Most people don't like the photos I take of them at first, it takes about 10 years and then they say that it's the best picture of them ever taken... it's probably because the photo is too honest"
"I'd like to photograph everybody in the world"

Uh, us first please, Mr Bailey!

We met Alexa outside, who was also in attendance for the great, DB!

By this time, we were well & truely parched so we took a wander through Knightsbridge for a lunchtime beverage... and ended up in Harrods, lusting after Mulberry's and trying not to purchase every delicious looking thing from the food courts! Mmm. Though, just who buys milk from Harrods?

Untitled UntitledUntitled

We did however, allow ourselves to purchase some teeny treats, including a very yummy strawb & champagne preserve for Lauren's mum & the cutest box of Macaroons in all our favourite flavours from the Laduree Cafe! We went for Rose, Violet & Blackberry, Raspberry & Coconut, Lemon and Salted Caramel! Best ever!

All in all, a pretty good day!

Much love,
Lauren xx

Literature Love // Limehouse Blues

litloving copy

Throughout the literary canon, suburban writers have been captivated with notions of London as a ferocious all-consuming beast, a sordid infusion of poverty, oppression, misdemeanor and deathly, industrial fumes. Everyone is well aware of Dickens' fascination with the plight of the afflicted Working Class, imagining funereal occurrences in squalid alleyways to a nervous bourgious readership. Likewise, in his poem 'London', William Blake discovers nothing but "marks of weakness, marks of woe" in the faces of those that reside by the "chartered Thames".

London's underworld is also the topic of this week's lit love as we've been flicking through Thomas' Burke's collection of poetry, 'The Song Book of Quong Lee of Limehouse'.

Lola received this book as a beautiful Christmas gift from her parents, a wonderful 1st edition from the 1920s complete with a stunning hand-drawn illustration in black ink, depicting a post-war Limehouse and an amazing orange chevron cover (which fits right in here at Twee Towers!). So beaut.

For those that don't know, after the Great War the Limehouse district in London became heavily populated with Chinese immigrants and has since been associated with myths and stories of mysterious murders in riverside alleys, sleazy opium dens and tales of innocent English girls lost in a dangerous abyss controlled by an evil Chinese settlement.

Even before the war, Dickens implied that Limehouse was the "lowest statum of the international hierachy in the streets around the London dock". Although, it's probably more likely that these tales were the result of conjecture, fuelled and exaggerated by the fear of the unfamiliar as London's cultural diversity began to develop.

Despite the bleak subject matter and brash realism, Burke's tone is satirical, fanciful and endearing as he romanticises stories of lust and murder among the lower-classes. We won't spoil it too much, but it's definitely worth a read!

As we mentioned the other day, our Literature Love feature is now bi-weekly to allow us to relax and enjoy reading again rather than rushing to finish every Friday, so it'll be back in two weeks time folks! In the meantime, next Friday we'll be revealing an exciting new way of presenting a very silent, recipe ;)

'Till next time...

Much love,
L&R xx

After Dinner Dance Party // The London Edition

Afterdinner copy

Well Lola twisted my arm and asked me to share some hits from some of my London faves...

Though temptation was overwhelming with the power in my hands this week to post a succession of McFly videos (well there's no point hiding my undying love for the pop-foursome since Lola outted me last week!) - I have picked a selection that I'll hope you'll love as much as I do as they bring back such happy memories of my London days...

Having been a fan from his early days, I don't share the opinion with some diehard fans who weren't all that impressed with Patrick Wolf's more commercial offering, 2007 album 'The Magic Position' - it has never failed to brighten up a dark day, you could often find me weaving through the streets of Whitechapel (because I lived there, not because I was a Jack the Ripper obsessive) with Wolf's weird and wonderfully melancholy beats blaring in my headphones. I was lucky enough to see him live with his good friend Bishi a few times while I was working for her as well as his own solo shows, an incredible performer.

Dev aka Lightspeed Champion was on my radar from my pre-London days, when he was in Test Icicles... I saw him perform the beautiful Galaxy Lost in the legendary 100 Club, it still gives me goosebumps listening to it now.

The sentiment of this song has always rang so true with me. I always felt that London was where I belonged, before I moved there I'd always feel so sad on the train home from a visit, and once I was down in the city I never wanted to leave. Sadly that feeling eventually went away, so I'm more than happy to be home now. But whenever I hear this song I remember that rush of love for The Big Smoke and how I wanted to stay there forever. Especially poignant that I got to see Jack performing this live at the Astoria just a few days after I'd moved down.

Last but not least, I couldn't not feature The Horrors... I forged many wonderful lifelong friendships from being a loyal follower of these boys. Right back to the very first gig I caught while attending a fashion summer school course at Central Saint Martins - their electrifying 100 Club show just before they burst onto the scene with their shocking Sheena is a Parasite video, right through to my days living in London, where my housemates often thought my gig going friends and I looked like we were attending 'very stylish funerals'...

Sigh, I miss it all so very much - we're well overdue a trip to The City. Hopefully we'll be able to share some new adventures from London very soon :)

Much love

Twee Towers Tour // The Bathrooms

Twee Towers Tour

This week in our tour of Twee Towers, we're letting you have a little sneak peak into the Bathrooms! 'Illusions of grandeur' is probably the best way to describe the theme that we went with in the main bathroom! As a backdrop we painted the walls a slate blue-grey and then placed cornflower blue and champagne coloured towels to finish! Over the top and lavish, we love that this bathroom has turned out to be such a luxurious room to soak in some bubbles and relax with a book (or a small glass of wine!)

Just a little tip... for a delicious bathtime experience try our latest obsession Pink Grapefruit body wash by The Body Shop... it smells sooooo gooood!

IMG_1806

Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who's the twee-est of them all...the ever so slightly ostentatious object of our affections! A guilty delight but oh beautiful, this ornate, baroque style mirror adds the perfect dose of drama and theatrics to the room!
IMG_1810

To compliment the baroque shape of the mirror we found these mirrored wall stickers in Urban Outfitters and had to have them! Absolute magpies!

IMG_1808

Chunky church style candles accentuate the opulance of the room.

IMG_1807

Playing with the over the top nature of the bathroom, we decided a little tongue in cheek Marie Antoinette portrait wouldn't go a-miss! First she ruled over France, now she reigns over the Twee Towers bathing rituals, encouraging us to indulge in some extravgent pampering. The frame was a re-worked thrifty find. Originially pink, we sprayed the frame white whilst leaving a sneaky peak of pink for a little splash of tarnished colour.

keep calm and carry on the loo

London's swinging! We decided that as the bathroom most visitors to Twee Towers would use, it was only apt that we styled the downstairs loo as a humourous tribute to our love for all things London! The staple, wartime 'Keep Calm & Carry On' dominates one wall - a relevant slogan for a downstairs loo one might think.

london loo

A cute collection of postcards, birthday cards & even Little M's first birthday invite!

queen in the loo

The piece de resistance... amongst the adorable mini wooden version of London made by Muji, the traditional wooden policeman and Selfridges' special edition Union Jack champagne resides... Queen Liz. We only realised how much we loved this being there when our male friends reported back of the uncomfortable pressure of weeing before Her Majesty the Queen.

Stand up & Salute!

Hope you're enjoying the tour sweets!

Much love,

Literature Love // The Lost Art of Keeping Secrets

litloving copy

The Lost Art of Keeping Secrets

The Lost Art of Keeping Secrets by Eva Rice was on our reading list this week - set in the 1950s, between London and rural England. The story centres on Penelope, and how her life is transformed by the chance encounter with the enigmatic Charlotte - the pair share an instant bond as they find themselves sharing a taxi to visit Charlotte's eccentric Aunt Clare just minutes after meeting for the first time.

The book follows the girls as they swoon after teddy boys (certainly the wrong sorts of boys for nice young girls like Charlotte and Penelope according to Aunt Clare...), get giddy over Johnny Ray and are knocked off of their feet by smouldering Americans. A whole host of eccentric characters are woven into the charming tapestry of the story, Charlotte's cousin Harry, an introspective magician, Penelope's younger brother Inigo, rebellious and obsessed with the new sounds of America - especially when his Uncle brings over a very early record by a 'funny hillbilly cat' named Elvis and Penelope's mother who is endearingly melodramatic.

Set against the backdrop of a crumbling stately home and glamorous parties in London - this dreamy book is perfect for taking you back in time to the romance and splendour of the 50s.

Excuse us while we loose ourselves in daydreams of kissing Elvis and Teddy boys... *sigh*

Much love.

Outfit Post // Field Day in LDN

IMG_1955

Hey, thought I'd do a quick outfit post from our recent trip to the big smoke for Field Day '11 as quite a few people have asked where I'd got bits from! Was SUCH a fun day, watching bands, milling around in hospitality ;), catching up with old friends and meeting some wonderful new ones!

Most of my outfit was made up of my favourite high street finds of this year...

IMG_1934

Stripy Dress: Topshop

IMG_1951

Collar: LouLou Loves You

One of the best birthday presents ever! My lovely friend Samantha bought me this collar after spending hours with me trying to find the perfect 'Birthday Dress' this time last year. I was looking for a Wednesday Adams style/sixties mini dress (fyi: mission unsuccessful).

I was completely overwhelmed when I unwrapped this beauty from 'LouLou Loves You'. Ironically from their 'Lola' range (...one could say it was meant to be) it's a stunning handmade peterpan collar made from silk. It's also incredibly versatile, I love wearing it over tee's to work to dress them up, as well as over dresses to give them a sixties edge.

Boots: Asos; Mustard & Tan Coloured Satchel: H&M.

IMG_1950

Summer Raincoat: Topshop '10.
I love this coat, it's light enough for the summer and has a hood - vital for England's sudden showers!

Mr Bagshaw wore...
Hat: Rokit in Covent Garden; Shirt: Gladrags vintage; Coat: Topshop circa 2007.

In honour of my trip to the city, thought I'd leave you with another of my faves, 'London' by Noonday Underground - such good footage too. Happy dancing Lovelies!
