Topshop Ties the Knot!

Hipster brides-to-be rejoice! Church bells are ringing & confetti is being thrown over at the church of Sir Philip Green, because on Tuesday, Topshop unveiled their very first BRIDAL line! Gasp! Excuse us for a moment while we turn into swooning idiots.

With no weddings to plan or attend this year, we can't quite work out why we're so excited either, but we’re thrilled to see that bridal wear is finally getting a style makeover! The capsule collection, ‘Tie the Knot’ is collaboration between Topshop and UK designer, Richard Nicoll, taking Nicoll's signature style of casual, femininity, tinged with a grunge vibe, influenced by the UK high street.

The collection consists of seven dresses in classic fabrics of chiffon, lace & silk, beautiful shift dresses and stunning flowy dresses, in a feminine palette of white & blush.

Whilst a few of the dresses are probably too similar to those lurking in the depths of the Twee Towers wardrobes (lace shift dress we’re talking about you, too cute!) we love that Topshop are encouraging the innovativeness that currently resides on the UK high street to creep into this market, and pushing British designers to take on the task of creating bridal wear that is both modern & affordable.

What does everyone else think? Would you wear good old Toppers on your wedding day?

On other news, we both have the day off today to tackle... the garden. Wish.Us.Luck.

Much love,
L&R xx

Friday Flicks // Dark Shadows

Another Cinema trip for Rhi and her younger sister Livvy - last weekend we caught up with Gothic director extraordinaire Tim Burton's adaptation of the 1960s series, Dark Shadows, , and once again Rhi found herself completely distracted from the film thanks to the fashion fest throughout the film (She makes a habit of this, see: Hunger Games vs Devil Wears Prada) ...

dark shadows costumes2

Well known is the dream team of Depp & Burton, the pair have been knocking all other movies off the top of my favourites lists with each new release for as long as I can remember. However, I always get most excited when reading that my most admired costume designer of all time, oscar winning Colleen Atwood, has once again been drafted in to dress the characters in Burton's films (a la Edward Scissor Hands, Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow, Alice in Wonderland, Big Fish & Sweeney Todd - not to mention her work outside of Burton's films in Chicago, Lemony Snicket and Memoirs of a Geisha - to name but a few). I don't think I have mentioned before, but while at London College of Fashion I had aspirations of working in Costume Design for film, so Atwood is somewhat of a heroine of mine, I get a little fangirly over her fantastical creations - so please bear with me!

The 1970s setting really worked so well with Burton's style of contrasting riotous colour with darkness, with costume and set design - like Edward Scissor Hands and his gothic figure standing out against the candy coloured suburban backdrop. Apparently the vast majority of the costumes were purposely created for the film - with a few vintage finds thrown in for authenticity (I spy original Ossie Clark on HBC in one of those promo pics, actually let out a squeal when I saw it!). Highlights above include: Victoia's capelet (swoon!); Eva Green in that jaw dropping red number (I could turn...); Chloe Moretz in the most amazing array of print dresses (especially that bib fronted one, want it and/or need it!); Michelle Pfeiffer's Karen Carpenter via Morticia Addams looks (apparently inspired by a David Bailey book entitled 'The Birth of Cool' - currently going for £300 on amazon, who wants to get me an early extravagant birthday present...?); Helena Bonham Carter's blouses with pinafore ensembles paired with an orange wig and huge sunglasses (essential due to her characters perpetual state of 'hungover') and, of course, in any incarnation or costume - Johnny Depp. Dish.

dark shadows soundtrack

No film set in the 70s would be complete without a sensational retrospective soundtrack - Danny Elfman (another regular Burton collaborator) writes yet another amazing score that sits alongside some truly great classics - and a performance by Alice Cooper ("the ugliest woman I have ever seen" according to Barnabas Collins, Depp's character). So I shall leave you with the Moody Blue's 1967 hit 'Knights in White Satin' - the opening track from the film.

So need to buy original Dark Shadows (the Barnabas Collins episodes) DVD, if only the full series was available in the UK! Feeling the need to revisit other supernatural families of the 60s - might be a good time to stock up on The Munsters and The Addams Family too, gosh don't get me started on the their iconic costuming as well, jeepers! Feeling my inner teenage goth creeping out!

Have a lovely weekend sweets!

Much love,
Rhi xx

An Interview with Alice Takes a Trip!

Today I'm absolutely delighted to share with you a recent interview we did with Claire and Lauren of my favourite independent label, Alice Takes a Trip. Regular readers of the blog may have caught a glimpse of their fab work, when I picked them for my Boutique Love feature at the start of the year... or every time I share an outfit post as their designs are never off my back!

I stumbled across this brand whilst I was uni and instantly fell in love with their magical little shop with a sewing machine set up in the corner and Victoriana inspired attire, using exquisite velvet fabrics, embellished with bows and dreamy vintage style lace. Since then, their collection and style has expanded greatly, offering the most charming collection of t-shirts, shorts, jumpers, dresses & bags! I find that the cut of the garments are always perfect (boyfriend fit tees, high waisted 50s fitting shorts), and the prints each season are always exciting and fresh.

I was absolutely thrilled when they asked me to model for their S/S 12 collection, and got to spend a day getting ready in their lush studio space, having our hair curled, plaited, crimped and top-knotted by the beautiful Jennifer of Jennifer Sarah Hairdressing and flouncing around in a grand hotel for the shoot in my dream wardrobe! They are both so incredibly lovely, so we got in touch again to find out a little more about their brand...

CLAIRE AND LOZ
Alice Takes A Trip, Owners & Designers (and sisters!) Lauren & Claire

QUESTION1

We got sewing machines from a very young age and have therefore always been interested in fashion. We soon started making our own clothes and so the obvious choice for us was to both go on and study fashion after leaving school - that way we got to learn proper techniques like pattern cutting.

QUESTION2

We established in 2006 - Claire opened a small boutique in the Forum shops in Sheffield while Lauren was at university. At this time Alice Takes a Trip mainly consisted of re-worked vintage and re-worked fun, quirky prom dresses that seemed to get our name on the market as a lot of companies wanted to use them for fashion shoots and shows. When Lauren finished university we decided to take Alice Takes a Trip to the next level and turn it into a brand name. We closed the shop and moved into a design studio to sell online and wholesale to shops and boutiques worldwide. Getting a boutique on ASOS has really boosted our company worldwide.

QUESTION3

Alice in Wonderland, the Victorian Fairytale has always been one of our main sources of inspiration, as every collection we always include a dolly dress. We don't have a set style icon as such, we get our dress inspiration from Victorian Pot Dolls and Victorian Clothing. The rest of our collection ties in with current trends of that season but with an added twist.

Victorian Inspired Velvet Peter Pan Collar Dress, Alice Takes A Trip

QUESTION4

An Alice girl is fashion forward and in with the trends but also wants to be different and stand out from the crowd. Our customers seem very loyal and come back over and over again. We try to add a new mini collection every six weeks to keep the brand fresh.

QUESTION5

We have won a few competitions but our favourite and most enjoyable has to be having the chance to be involved with Channel 4's Frock Me TV Show, which was hosted by Alexa Chung & Henry Holland. During the show we designed and made an outfit for one of the contestants - they then went on to win best dressed in the show. We took part in our first trade show a couple of years ago at London Edge and had the smallest stall there, but went on to win the Best Dressed Stall of that Season. We were excited to catch Caryn Franklin browsing our rails at the clothes show and purchasing two of our t-shirts for her daughters.

QUESTION6

Most things are done in our studio. That means we do the designing, the making, the photoshoots, the website, and flyer designs and everything else that crops up, so it's all pretty full on. Even though it can be hard, it's what we love doing and we think it's what makes Alice Takes a Trip unique. With Alice contanstly growing we are having some things factory made but have sourced a local factory in the UK to still keep things made in our home town of Sheffield.

QUESTION7

We have something very exciting up our sleeves and are working on an exclusive designer range for Alice Takes a Trip. We don't want to give too much away right now but this should be ready in around 4 weeks.

QUESTION8
We are in the studio from 8am till 6pm every week day and grab a few mins for lunch on the go. It's constantly non-stop but we wouldn't have it any other way.

QUESTION 9

Our little Alice teams consists of mix musical tastes to it's a constant battle for the ipod. Once your back's turned the song has changed! Ha!

Outfit Post // Vogue Festival 2012

As anyone who is following us on twitter or instagram will be well aware, on Saturday we were lucky enough to attend Vogue's very first fashion festival at the weekend. We will warn you now, this is probably going to be a long post, so much to tell you!

Untitled

Our journey to the Royal Geographical Society, the venue for the second day of the Vogue Fest, was somewhat less than stylish. We sleepily dragged ourselves up and out of bed at the ungodly hour of 5am, to manically rush to the train station, attracting some dubious stares from passers-by on our way as we coated up on layers of lipstick and clumped by in completely unpractical platforms (further confirmation on the unpracticality of platforms coming later...)

We then had an anxious 40 mins of watching announcements of our train getting more and more delayed! We made it to London with 15 minutes to make our way over to South Kensington, so we got our fast-as-we-can-in-huge-heels walk on!

Untitled UntitledUntitled UntitledUntitled

Lauren wore: Coat, ASOS Premium; Collar, Lou Lou Loves You; Jeans, Topshop; Shirt, H&M (ribbon added!); Wedges, ASOS; Socks, Topshop; Satchel, H&M.

Rhi wore: Dress, Christopher Kane for Topshop; Coat, Topshop; Cardigan, Matalan; Shoes, Next; Bag, Primark

Equilibrium was restored once more as we flounced up Exhibition Road, home to the marvelous Natural History Museum and the V&A, stopping to take a few snaps of the magnificent architecture... until, Lauren stacked it and went head over heels (platform drama)... and came back up with a cut hand and damaged pride, gah. Luckily, there was only one other lovely man in the vicinity that viewed the disaster, and came over with concern and a whole lot of pity in his eyes. C'est la vie!

UntitledUntitled Untitled UntitledUntitled

First up was a talk by the absolutely incredible Diane Von Furstensberg, entitled, 'Turning a passion for life into a penchant for business'. We've all heard about formidable impact that Diane made upon the fashion world, creating the first ever wrap dress, and staying true to the goals she set for herself at an early age. She began her fairytale (literally, she married a Prince!) by recalling how she created her very first collection whilst heavily pregnant, and then continued by leading us through an enchanting labrinyth of her life, career twists and turns, her walk away from fashion, and finally her phenomenal comeback!

She was beautiful, inspirational, funny and unbelievably grounded. What a lady! We think everyone left wishing that DVF would be their fairy godmother, appearing whenever we had a momentary crisis of confidence, or were in desperate need of one her figure loving wrap dresses. We might even allow ourselves to watch all the re-runs of The City to get more glimpses of the DVF HQ! Here's a few of our favourite quotes from DVF,

"Be the woman you want to be."
"I was told to focus on the vintage, after all I am myself, vintage", DVF on bringing back her 70s wrap dresses.
"I had three children, a boy, a girl, and a brand."
"As a young girl, I did not know what I wanted to be, but I knew the woman that I wanted to be... independent, a woman that pays her own bills, can go out with a man without worrying if he'll call."

UntitledUntitled

We left the main auditorium as fast we could to try and catch Tim Walker, only to find that that the session was already in progress and the queue for the second was so big it spiralled through 3 rooms. We are sad to say that we sacrificied our position to ensure that we didn't lose a seat for the next few talks back in the main theatre.

However, we did manage to find out that he only uses film rather than digital cameras and natural sunlight, amazing (thanks Emma!). For the hour that we had spare, we had a wander through some of the other rooms, and stumbled across the cover shoot room (where you could dress up in designer and adorn yourself with a Chanel bag and leave with a professionally taken photo of yourself on the front of a mocked up Vogue cover) The other highlight was the red lipstick bar... we died and went to red lipstick heaven!

Untitled

It was then time, to head back for the next session. Fashion Question Time! We definitely should have got ourselves a quick refreshment from one of the lovely make-shift cafes that Vogue had set up, dehydration is not cool. Anyway, Fashion QT was a panel of fashion's finest talent, including Christopher Kane, Holly Fulton, Henry Holland, Roksanda Ilincic, Mary Katrantzou and Nicholas Kirkwood, interrogated by a selection of questions sent in via twitter and the audience.

To our surprise, they were all incredibly humble and dare we say, quite shy. We were expecting Devil Wears Prada esque attitude from someone, but they all seemed, lovely. They were also all incredibly knowledgeable about the design business as a whole, and most of all realistic about their profession. Recalling moments of excitement as their business began to explode across the fash-o-sphere, divulging secrets about their pre-show nerves, post-show celebrations (they party hard) and offering fascinating insight into their brands and helpful advice to audience member's questions.

It has to be said, Roksanda Ilincic is out.of.this.world. Not only is she one of the most beautiful ladies in the whole universe, with a wardrobe and collection to die for (a collection that has been worn by Michelle Obama & Kate Middleton no less), but she is also blessed with the most enchanting, ethereal manner, it would be difficult not to be captivated by her absolute loveliness!

We have been banging on about our excitement for the David Bailey relentlessly for a week now, we apologise profusely if you follow us on twitter. It goes without saying that he is one of the most iconic photographers of our time. In fact, iconic doesn't even cover it. There's not anything that we can say about his back story that everyone shouldn't already know. Interviewed by Vogue Features Director, Jo Ellison, Bailey was an absolute gem. Completely charming, endearingly brash, charismatic and oh so, cheeky (admitting that he was unsure about the casting of Karen Gillan as the beautiful Jean Shimpton, joking that he'd rather bed Aneurin Barnard than Karen, eek!) In addition to this he spoke about his more recent ventures, namely the photography he's been doing out in Afghanistan. He had the whole auditorium laughing with him and at him, the entire time. Here's a few of our favourite Bailey quotes,

"Everybody has a story, I just have to find it"
"This shirt I'm wearing is, David Lawrence, Ralph Lawrence? what is it? Ralph Lauren!"
"Most people don't like the photos I take of them at first, it takes about 10 years and then they say that it's the best picture of them ever taken... it's probably because the photo is too honest"
"I'd like to photograph everybody in the world"

Uh, us first please, Mr Bailey!

UntitledUntitled

We met Alexa outside, who was also in attendance for the great, DB!

By this time, we were well & truely parched so we took a wander through Knightsbridge for a lunchtime beverage... and ended up in Harrods, lusting after Mulberry's and trying not to purchase every delicious looking thing from the food courts! Mmm. Though, just who buys milk from Harrods?

Untitled UntitledUntitled

We did however, allow ourselves to purchase some teeny treats, including a very yummy strawb & champagne preserve for Lauren's mum & the cutest box of Macaroons in all our favourite flavours from the Laduree Cafe! We went for Rose, Violet & Blackberry, Raspberry & Coconut, Lemon and Salted Caramel! Best ever!

All in all, a pretty good day!

Much love,
Lauren xx
